With London Climate Action Week underway, here are some pretty convincing stats why brands should give a damn about sustainability:

• Nearly 50% of consumers globally choose to buy from brands with a clear commitment to sustainability
• 53% of brands say improving sustainability is a top priority this year. 
• 8 supply chains account for 50% of all global carbon emissions.
• 2020 saw a drop in emissions as a result of COVID-19, at around 5–10% compared to 2019 – the largest since the Second World War
• 3 out of 5 consumers said socially responsible or sustainable products made up at least half of their last purchase.

✔️ (Article) Is sustainable fashion going mainstream?: Last month, the ITV reality show, Love Island announced that this year’s contestants will be showcasing secondhand clothing instead of fast-fashion pieces. Check out eConsultancy’s article on Love Islands' partnership with eBay and how this is impacting consumers and other high street brands. An interesting read for sure!

78% OF CONSUMERS CHOOSE ETHICS OVER PRICE

There’s no doubt that today’s consumers are more eco-conscious than ever before. 

According to research by Retail Economics and Squire Patton Boggs, 78% of consumers would not switch to a cheaper brand if its company values were not aligned with their own.

In fact, Gen Z is two-thirds more concerned about the ethics and sustainability factor of brands than any other age group. 

The research also highlights that 66% of consumers are planning to spend less on non-essential items this year and 29% plan to stop purchasing holidays, furniture, and electrical goods altogether.

MEET GUILHEM

Guilhem Isaac Georges is our new VP of Sustainability. He’s been passionate about sustainability since he was young and loves reading academic studies and technical reports on energy and climate issues.  

He spends most of his free time renovating his country house in the South West of France and is a music fiend! He also loves cooking and discovering new restaurants in Paris (it’s safe to say, he’s fitting right in).

And now for the quick-fire round 🔥 🔥 🔥

Biggest UX pet peeve: La Depeche website, it’s the local newspaper from the area I grew up in the South West of France. Just too many ads. It’s impossible to close it and access any content. 

Best customer experience: Amazon. Everything is simple and smooth. The delivery service is also extremely efficient. 

Most used app:  FIP! It’s a French radio app that’s simple, well-designed, and plays great tracks. Fun fact, it’s also Elon Musk's favorite radio station 😉

Best sustainability tip: Measure your carbon footprint with CoolClimate Network or the app designed by Greenly. It calculates your emissions based on your expenses and is directly linked to your credit card.  

Biggest work fail: I used to work for France’s Minister of Ecology. During a work trip, I was in charge of the Minister's speech. Long story short, somehow my daughter had gotten her hands on the papers and drawn all over them. Thankfully, I had extra copies with me (and had to run across the huge conference room to bring them to her 🤦🏻‍♂️). 

Favorite podcast: I am a big fan of historical podcasts. "La Marche de l'histoire" is my favourite.

Top tune: Probably "Give up the Funk" b Parliament
